April 12 – Madrid

Hotel Suites Vienna
C/ Juan Álvarez Mendizábal, 17
28008 Madrid

Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is relatively “new” by European standards (just over 400 years old).  Home to over 3 million people, it is the geographical, administrative, and cultural center of Spain, with national treasures such as the Royal Palace, Retiro Park, and the Prado and Reina Sofía art museums.

April 13 – 17  Sevilla

Homestays with Spanish Families

Sevilla is the crown jewel of southern Spain’s Andalucia province.  For a relatively small city (population 700,000), it boasts a rich architectural and cultural history.  Sevilla blends elements from the Muslim conquest in 700 and its “golden age” as the most important port of call for ships returning from the Americas in the 16th and 17th centuries, with modern wonders like Santiago Calatrava’s Alamillo Bridge.  While in Sevilla, each student will be partnered with a Spanish family from the private Colegio Aljarafe for a 5-day homestay.  During the day, students will attend class with their homestay brothers and sisters, and in the afternoons and evenings get to enjoy activities such as flamenco dancing, tapas tastings, and visiting the Cathedral and Giralda Tower.

April 18 – 19 Grazalema

Villa Turistica Grazalema
El Olivar, s/n
11610 Grazalema

After saying goodbye to our host families we will travel to the small, whitewashed town of Grazalema (population: 2,200), nestled in the Grazalema National Park.  Here we get to know small-town life, and participate in a number of outdoor activities.  We’ll even have a chance to talk about our impressions of Spain over the air on the town’s morning radio broadcast!

April 20 El Bosque

El Bosque – Albergue Juveníl
Molino de Enmedio s/n
11670 El Bosque

An easy, unencumbered hike from nearby town Benamahoma along the Majaceite River, brings us to this small village.  Here we will do a bread-making workshop at a water-powered mill, and learn to make our own delicious fried churros.

April 21 Nerja

Hostal Don Peque
C/ Diputación, 13
29780 Nerja

No trip to southern Spain would be complete without a day on the Mediterranean Coast.  In the morning we’ll visit the spectacular Caves of Nerja, home to some of the earliest known cave paintings in the world.  In the afternoon we’ll explore the beaches of this small town, before a private paella dinner allows us a delicious way to reflect on our time in Spain.
